What is NPWT for wounds?

Negative Pressure Wound Therapy (NPWT), also known as wound vac therapy, is a treatment that uses gentle suction to help a wound heal. A special device creates a vacuum over the wound through a sealed dressing. This helps remove fluid, reduce swelling, and promote faster healing.

Negative Pressure Wound Therapy (NPWT): A Simple Guide

  • Speeds up healing
  • Reduces swelling and drainage
  • Helps close the wound
  • Lowers the risk of infection
  • Improves blood flow to the wound area

Pros:

  • Faster healing
  • Less risk of infection
  • Can be done at home or in a clinic

Cons:

  • Can be uncomfortable at times
  • May require regular dressing changes
  • Not suitable for all wounds
  • Equipment must be worn most of the day

NPWT is helpful for patients with:

  • Surgical wounds
  • Pressure ulcers (bedsores)
  • Diabetic foot ulcers
  • Traumatic or deep wounds
  • Wounds with heavy drainage
  • Wounds that are slow to heal
  • Wound must be clean and free from active infection
  • Adequate blood flow to the area
  • No exposed blood vessels or organs
  • Patient can tolerate the therapy
  • Medical provider determines if it is appropriate use

Treatment length varies based on wound type and size. Most patients use NPWT for a few weeks to several months, depending on healing progress.

  • Surgical incisions
  • Chronic wounds
  • Pressure ulcers
  • Burns
  • Trauma wounds

Licensed wound care specialists and specialized wound care nurses trained in NPWT apply and manage the therapy.

Dressings are usually changed every 2–3 days, or more often

  1. The wound is cleaned and assessed.
  2. A foam or gauze dressing is placed inside the wound.
  3. A vacuum-sealed bandage is applied over it.
  4. A tube connects the dressing to the vacuum device.
  5. The device applies gentle suction to help the wound heal.

NPWT can be done in a clinic, hospital, nursing home, or even at home with trained support. We offer this service at our Paramount clinic, as well as through mobile services throughout California.

After only a few UltraMIST treatments, my wounds are healing up fast and I’d say the swelling in my legs has gone down about 75%. And guess what’s the best part: zero pain.
